Class Feedback

  • Your 3 favorite activities & 1-2 sentences on why they worked for you
    • Plaster casting: Although my finished product was a fail, I love the backstory to it. It gave me the opportunity to go to the beach after months and catch up with a friend. I forgot the plaster when we went to HB so I just ended up doing it at home the next day. But at least I ate some ice cream with an old friend of mine at the beach.
    • Finger painting: This activity was liberating and so much fun even though I got some paint on my favorite shirt. I actually did this activity a few more times just because I was bored.
    • Design thinking: This activity was something that helped me as an individual. It gave me insight of my future. It also feels nice to have a plan to follow up on.
  • Your 3 least favorite activities & 1-2 sentences on why they didn’t work so much for you
    • Graffiti: I think it would have worked out for me if 1.) my can actually worked and 2.) I had a bigger canvas.
    • Auto drawing: As fun as it was, my sister was just being annoying and she just tried to force the flow of the colored pencils.
    • Corpse: I was actually excited to do this because I had the idea of “dying” at Target, and titling my blog post “Shop Till I Drop” (get it?) because I love going to Target and spending all my money there. However, my manager asked me to come in on that Sunday night and I was unable to post it.
  • Course Format – did you like Art Activities & Artist Conversations? Would a regular lecture class have been better? Or some other format?
    • I honestly can’t think of a better way of tackling the course format. It worked out well. The art activities weren’t hard at all; they were fun. Having to go to the SOA galleries and interview artists gave me the chance to explore part of campus that I would have never gone to if it wasn’t for this class. It also gave me a chance to talk to some pretty cool individuals so that was nice. A regular lecture class would have been boring. Art activities and artist conversations gave the class that necessary spice.
  • WordPress – was this a good way to post your work? Would something else be better?
    • WordPress, Tumblr, any blog site would work. Even Instagram would work. I’m glad we didn’t use BeachBoard because if we did, it wouldn’t give me a chance to look back on all the things I did.
  • “Beacharts” class website – was this helpful? Would putting everything on Beachboard instead have been better?
    • I find BeachBoard unnecessary in this class except seeing ones’ grade of course. I think the website was very helpful. Literally everything is on there, even from the past semesters, but yet it’s organized to see the overview the current semester so it’s convenient for students.
  • What did you think of the “A-B-C” 3-part format? Better than a normal semester? Unnecessarily complicated?
    • I don’t think it’s “unnecessarily complicated” necessarily. I understand why the first 3 weeks had to be spent in class. Correct me if I’m wrong, but spending 3 weeks in class first, rather than tackling artist conversations and art activities in the 1st or 2nd week, is better because in that 3 week span, people could be added or dropped from the class. So it’s a nice way to keep everything settled and fair for those who get added later. The 10 weeks full of art activities and artist conversations was fun. The last 3 weeks is also nice to destress because of finals season.
  • Anything else about the class. What worked? What could have been better?
    • All in all, I think everything in this class worked out well. I even liked how in some weeks, we had two options of which art activity to do. I feel like there should have more beach opportunities but that’s just me because I love going to the beach.
    • I also liked how the instructor included ways to bond with the class and give a chance for everyone to meet other people. I’m a very shy person at first but once I meet them, I come out of my shell a little bit so it’s nice to feel comfortable in a class.
    • However, I wish I was comfortable enough to speak in front of the class. There were times I wanted to include feedback to what the instructor was asking/saying, but I just get anxiety from speaking in front of a big crowd. However, I don’t think there’s much he can do to help me feel less insecure of talking to the whole class. It’s really just up to me.
    • Lastly, I like how the instructor always elicited conversations. Every Monday/Wednesday, he would ask how we’re doing or how the semester’s doing. It just goes to show how much he actually cares.

Art & my Life

I stay sane by doing small projects (or anything really) that involve me having to use my creative side. I enjoy doodling, drawing, calligraphy, and anything artsy. I may not be the best, but it’s a good pass time and stress reliever. And that’s why I decided to enroll in ART 110; because it gave me the opportunity to bring out my creative side. Also, I didn’t want my schedule to be full of boring lectures so one creative class would spice it up a little bit.

Coming into this class, I knew I was going to have a chance to learn or do something I’ve never done before. Of course, each week I was proven right. From the very beginning, I got the chance to perform a task that I (honestly) didn’t even know existed. Plaster casting? I mean how often does one get to make a mold of their hand out of sand? I bet none of my friends have done that. But I have, which brings me to my point that ART 110 has given me so many opportunities to do something I have never thought of doing before.

I also learned that art isn’t just paint on a canvas. It’s in films, performances, clay, wood, and everything. In fact, this class taught me things beyond what goes on in the SOA galleries. Glenn Zucman understands that not everyone is going to live a life in art but he hopes that art will be in their life. He also hopes that people gain something and gain insight for themselves as a person and their future. For example, the design thinking project really got me thinking. I’ve always wanted to pursue becoming a counselling therapist. However, after doing research, and working on my 5 year plan, I see that I’m much more confident and I can see myself more as becoming a school psychologist. I even realized how much I love to film and edit.

With that being said, if I were to become a therapist of some sort, I can tend to my patients by incorporating art. One way to help destress them is to have them draw something; draw whatever is on their mind, whatever emotion they are feeling and then have them explain to me. Another way I can incorporate art is by showing them pictures of abstract images and have them explain to me what they see. When using art in psychology, it actually reveals perception and characteristics of a person.

When I grow up, I want to give my kids a chance to pursue art. Now that I’m 18 years old, I wish that my parents enrolled me in some singing class or dance class when I was younger. I even wish they made me play club volleyball but that’s another story. I just feel like I’m not living life to the fullest if I don’t have a skill that I’m actually good at. I mean, everyone can sing and dance, but it’s just a matter of how well they do it. That’s why years from now, when I have kids, I’m going to sign them up for all these things to bring out the creative side in them and gain the talents I wish I had growing up. If they don’t like it, that’s fine, as long as I tried and as long as they tried.

All in all, ART 110 was a great experience. This class has given me the chance to meet new students and creative geniuses, and create small projects that I have never done before. It even helped me realize the smallest things such as learning to appreciate abstract more than concrete. More importantly, it gave me so much insight as an individual.

5 Year Plan:

  1. Continue Bachelor’s degree in Psychology. Volunteer at mental health settings.
  2. Finish bachelor’s. Apply for grad school. Network with people. Continue internships. Move out of parent’s house.
  3. Work on master’s degree.
  4. Continue to finish master’s degree. Travel in the summer. Apply for doctoral degree program.
  5. Work on doctoral degree. Get license.

I’ve always loved helping other, especially my friends. It makes me feel good when they go to me for advice. That’s what helped me decide that I want to become a therapist. Also, I didn’t want to follow the Filipino nurse stereotype so I chose to do my own thing.

All in all, I can see myself as a therapist. It’s going to be a long road and we’ll see if I can handle it. My confidence is at a 7 because I’ve set my mind on this for a long time. I just don’t know if I’ll be able to hang in there for 6+ years when I can barely handle my second semester of college. However, in the end, if I do become a therapist, I will be more than satisfied.

  3. Continue graduate program and internship in school psychology. Travel in summer.
  4. Get NASP Certification.
  5. Get licensed.

As previously stated, I love helping others. The steps to becoming a school psychologist is definitely shorter (but doesn’t make it easier) than becoming a therapist so my confidence is at an 8. Not only that, but I would love to work with kids and help them overcome their issues.

The thing you would do if you were financially secure, and no one would ever laugh, go ahead, what would it be?: Film Editor

5 Year Plan:

  1. Finish bachelor’s to learn more about editing and the industry, while working on projects to build up portfolio, and networking. Move to Hollywood
  2. Become an apprentice under a film editor. Continue to network and portfolio. Get an entry level job at a film studio.
  3. Start own editing business. Become an assistant editor in a film production.
  4. Take all opportunities to try and work at big film production.
  5. Work on big break. Get name out there. Edit major films.

Growing up, I’ve always been fascinated with film and editing. In the 4th grade, my dad bought me Sony Vegas and it just took off from there. I started playing with effects and other editing tools. I would even film a few videos myself here and there. It wasn’t until high school that gave me more opportunities to show off my skills. Spanish projects, promo videos, ASB videos, and even my television class gave me a chance to film and edit. I even traveled to places to make “vlogs” or simple cinematography.

As much as I love filming and editing, I’m not as confident in pursuing this because this industry is so competitive. One would have to know the right people to get the right opportunities. Even though I know a few people in this industry but I’m not sure if they would be able to help me catch a big break.

I don’t want to work for and make small independent films throughout my life. I want to make it big. I want to work for big companies such as FOX, Disney, Freeform, even Marvel!

Wk10 – Artist Conversation – Short Story

IMG_2667.jpg

Meet Alaska, the space alien dog.

But she’s not just some ordinary space alien dog. Nah. She’s the guardian and protector of the Milky Way, respected by all creatures in this galaxy. Well… at least most.

Being the strong and powerful guardian she is, she’s got a few bad guys on her tail (Pun intended). She’s defeated over a thousand of the most freakiest, weirdest, creepiest, baddest bad guys in her lifetime. But her space adventures aren’t over yet, for it’s just the beginning!

She may be small and pudgy but Alaska’s got a few tricks up her sleeve, given to her by the veterans. Alaska can (obviously) run extremely fast, especially when she’s chasing after a ball. She can even shoot spit out of her mouth. But it’s not just your average spit… Her spit can deteriorate anything and anyone that it comes to contact with!

However, with all great heroes comes with great weaknesses and Alaska’s weakness are squirrels. If she sees a squirrel in the midst of battle, game might be over for her. She’ll get distracted and chase after a squirrel for a few seconds before snapping back to reality. Those few seconds are crucial and it’s almost always been the game changer in all her battles. One time, she was going head to head with this psycho nymph but got distracted by a squirrel and she almost got hypnotized to death by the nymph! Luckily she snapped out of it just in time because Alaska has an amazing mental strengths.

Who knows who will pop up next to try and conquer Alaska and her universe?

Wk 9 – Art Activity – ePortfolio

For you blog post about this Activity, shoot some screen caps of your website “Before” and “After.” Write about your goals for your website. Who is your audience? What do you want to communicate to them? How are you achieving this?

I didn’t have a chance to screenshot my previous website but this was my header:

scott

RIP to my header. You will be missed.

But here’s to my new website/ePortfolio.

ahsahs

My audience is for anyone who is looking for a film editor or someone to film a project. I want to show them my work so they can see if my style fits the idea they have in mind. I’m achieving this through my “About Me” page and “My Work” page.

Wk 7 – Art Activity – LA Flag

step1

First 2 steps of my flag.

step2flag

Final product.

I didn’t want my flag to be super bright so I decided to stick with calm colors.

The pale yellow circle represents the famous Sunset Blvd. in LA. When I think of LA, I usually think of tall skyscrapers, thus I put it in the center of the “sunset”. The 4 stripes is the sunset reflecting on the ocean water since Venice Beach is in Los Angeles.

My flag is noticeably different from the original LA flag. The LA flag consists of green, yellow, and orange. Mine only includes blue, yellow, and black. The only similarity is the incorporation “City of Los Angeles Founded 1781” and the color yellow. Both flag hold different symbols at all. When making this flag, I generally included pictures and other things that people think of when they think “Los Angeles”. The original flag included a much broader view of LA, including vineyards and even olive trees.

Wk 7 – Art Activity – Auto Drawing

This activity kind of reminded me of the finger painting activity. Just like the finger painting activity, I let my hands run free. I did whatever it wanted to do without thinking or hesitating.

This experience was fun. I asked my sister to do this activity with me and she just went along with it.

So we closed our eyes and relaxed.

I think the first few minutes she was trying to sabotage my art because she was aggressive about it, would take control, and just straight up drew lines. But then I told her to take it seriously and ended up with this:

IMG_2382

I think the pastel colors were really nice. Although the drawing looks like a 5 year old did it, the color scheme is pleasing to my eye. Overall, as always, the experience was exciting because of the surprise. Our eyes were closed so of course we didn’t know what was actually being drawn on the paper so that was the thrilling part. 10/10 would recommend doing an activity like this again.
